The oath-taking ceremonies for newly elected members of local councils and the pledge-signing ceremonies for members of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) commenced today across the Maldives.
The ceremonies began at 9:00 a.m. and are being held in cities and islands nationwide at various scheduled times throughout the day.
Members elected to the 5th term of local councils are being sworn in before judges or magistrates appointed for their respective constituencies. In addition, the oath-taking ceremonies for members of the five City Councils, along with the pledge-signing ceremonies for newly elected WDC members, are also scheduled to take place today.
According to official statistics, a total of 678 councillor positions were open for election, of which 677 councillors have been elected. Among them, 676 councillors are scheduled to take their oath of office today, 17 May 2026.
For Women’s Development Committees, a total of 678 positions were open for elections, with 673 members elected. Of these, 662 members are scheduled to sign their pledges today.
Following today’s ceremonies, the newly elected local councils and Women’s Development Committees will officially commence their duties for the new term.
